OTT content licensing in India: start with the audience
A practical starting point for platforms acquiring international films, documentaries and animation.
A catalogue is most useful when it answers a programming need. Before requesting a large collection of screeners, define who the service is trying to reach and which viewing habits the collection should support.
Turn the audience into a brief
An audience description should help the distributor choose between titles. “International films” is broad. A brief for contemporary European dramas, feature-length factual films or short-form animation creates a more focused conversation. Include any editorial exclusions and the languages your viewers use.
Match the rights to the service
Describe the business model accurately. A subscription service, an advertising-supported library and a transactional rental store can require different grants. A platform operating several models should identify each one rather than assume that a general digital licence covers everything.
List the required countries, intended licence duration and exclusivity preference. Availability must be checked against the rights holder’s authority, existing agreements and release windows. A title appearing in a catalogue does not guarantee that every right is available in India.
Separate existing assets from planned localization
Ask which subtitles, dubbed versions, masters and marketing assets already exist. If new localization is required, agree who approves it, who pays for it and which party may use the resulting files. A proposed language version is different from an asset ready for delivery.
Make the first screening round useful
Shortlist titles from trailers, then request private screeners with your company details and acquisition brief. Record which titles fit, which do not and what would change the decision. Specific feedback makes the next recommendation more useful.
