1960. An eleven-year-old boy runs away from his country, a small village in Basilicata, going to take refuge with a shoemaker brother in the capital. Here he will take a new life path: he will start working in a bar, he will obtain a primary school diploma thanks to the help of a woman who, fifteen years later, will become his mother-in-law. The economic boom goes hand in hand with his growth as a boy as well as socially: his only worry is the pain inflicted on his parents, very humble people of the south, in an agricultural reality of poverty and dignity. However, everything seems to be flowing in the right direction when he makes the sad discovery that his idealized brother and initial point of reference for his social redemption is actually a small-time gambler, even going so far as to risk his life for easier earnings which unfortunately will never come and which will sadly cause him to return, prematurely, to his country of origin. Vincenzo, our protagonist, disappointed by the news he learned on his return from military service, will seek further redemption for himself and his brother who was prematurely defeated by life: he will open commercial businesses, consolidating his social success in the capital, but always with the regret of not having his family of origin and above all his brother Giovanni close to him. He will return to his country now as an adult man, to the bedside of his dying father, bringing with him the memories of a child, albeit as a winning man for his people, but defeated by the feelings towards the people closest to him that he did not fully experience and which will leave him regretting a half-lived life.
