According the Italian historian Riccardo Zapperi, Leonardo’s Gioconda would be Pacifica Brendani, a woman from Urbino loved by the son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, named Giuliano. In 1511 Pacifica gave birth to Giuliano’s son, Ippolito who could not know his mother who had died soon after the delivery. Just for that reason Giuliano asked Leonardo to portray Pacifica in order to give the painting to his son. Unfortunately even Giuliano died in 1516: so that Leonardo kept the portrait and carried it in France where he moved in 1517. Ippolito became a Cardinal and a politician eager to bring the power of his family back over Florence. In Rome his court has been known for a while for its eccentricity and splendour but Ippolito died in a short while, probably poisoned. Nowadays there’s nothing left of Ippolito except the memories of his intrigues, of his bad temper, of his magnificent origin, of his love for women and poetry.
